The flowers are large and intricate, growing up to 3 inches wide with long, trailing petals under the upper petals. Columbine generally face straight up, making them a good plant for the edges of flowerbeds where they can be enjoyed up close. They prefer full sun and moist soil with adequate drainage. They are known to attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to a garden. Columbine look much like a flower within a flower. The inner flower is generally light-colored and has rounded petals. The outer part of the flower has larger, pointed petals and a color that can range from blue to red, white, purple or yellow. They make beautiful cut flowers that can stand alone or be enhanced by other flowers.
