Review & Description
This native wildflower gets its name from the fact that its leaves are whorled along the stem. Small, greenish-white flowers occur in flat-topped clusters on the upper part of the stem. Though toxic to livestock when consumed in large quantities, this species of milkweed is a larval food source for the monarch butterfly, and has reportedly been used by Native American tribes as a medicinal plant. This plant is strongly linked to sandy soils and dry locations.
