This plant is best known for its use as an herbal tea! Mad-dog Skullcap's little "hooded" blue flowers do not appear at the top of the stem. The name of the species, 'lateriflora' means having 'lateral flowers' or 'flowers to the side'! This species is called "Mad-dog Scullcap" because it was a supposed cure for hydrophobia.
